Carlene Lois Monson

Carlene Lois (Gatheridge Sylling) Monson, age 70 of Spring Grove, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Mon. Feb. 9, 2015 at Tweeten Lutheran Healthcare in Spring Grove. She was born on Oct. 23, 1944 in Hallock, MN to Carl and Lois Alberta Helen (Cameron) Gatheridge, she grew up on a farm near Humboldt, Mn. In 1962 she graduated Valedictorian of her high school class of 17 students. In Sept. 1962, she started training to be a medical and x-ray technician at the College of Medical Technology in Minneapolis, MN, she graduated in Dec. of 1963. She worked at the old Spring Grove Hospital. On Dec. 28, 1963 Carlene married Andrew Charles Sylling, at the Evangelical Free Church in St. Vincent, MN Carlene and Andrew lived with Martha Sylling (Andrew’s mother) until they moved in 1966 to a near by farm. They had four children, Susan, Albert, Nancy, and Wayne. Andrew passed away of a sudden heart attack. Later on July 24, 1976 Carlene married Mark Alan Monson, they had two children Daniel and Thomas, Mark later adopted the four older children. Carlene and Mark lived in Lakewood, Co, while Mark attended the Colorado School of Trades Gunsmithing to be a gunsmith. They moved back to the Spring Grove area in 1980. Carlene worked for a couple years at an attorney’s office during tax season, she later earned her associate degree in accounting from WWTC in La Crosse, WI, She worked for Carolyn Gaustad’s Tax Service in Caledonia, Mn and later worked at Winnebago Software for many years and later Sagebrush also in Caledonia until her retirement in 2008, she later did part-time work at Quillin’s IGA. She was a member of Wilmington Lutheran Church and it’s women’s groups. She enjoyed knitting and quilt making, and made each of her children and grandchildren a Christmas ornament each year. Survivors include her husband Mark of Wilmington Twp., and their children Wayne Andrew Monson, Daniel (Kris) Monson, Thomas Alvin Monson, Susan Carlene (Leon Jr.) Spinden, and Nancy Jo (Alan) Thomas. Thirteen grandchildren Coty Vickerman, Danielle (Paul) Forrester, Leon Spinden III, Andrea Thomas, Cheyenne Spinden, Rebecca Monson, Angelica Spinden, Andrew Monson, Mikai Thomas, Angelena O’Bieglo, Kylie Hanson, Thomas Irish and Jaysai Thomas. Three great-grandchildren Ashlyn Vickerman, Paxon Forrester and Bryn Forrester. Her brothers Charles (Marilyn) Gatheridge and Douglas Gatheridge, and her sister Helen Gatheridge. She was preceded in death by her husband Andrew Sylling and son Albert Monson.
