Marie Genevieve Ellingson Hanson

Dateline: Spring Grove, MN With heavy hearts and cherished memories, Marie Ellingson Hanson passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024, at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah, Iowa, with family by her side. Marie was born in Spring Grove, Minnesota, on November 24, 1924, to Gilbert and Gertie Buxengard, where she was raised in a Norwegian home. After graduating from Spring Grove High School, Marie married Harold “Link” Ellingson on May 27, 1944. Together they had four children: Sharon, Susan, Randy and Renee. Her daughter, Susan, passed away in July of 2015. Marie was also blessed with four grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Link passed away in February of 1980. On July 2, 1988, Marie married Chester “Bud” Hanson. From this marriage she was blessed with two stepchildren, Lynnette and Kevin, along with step-grandchildren and step-greatgrandchildren. Bud passed away in January of 2006. Marie worked in a nursing home and loved being a school cook at the Spring Grove School for several years. She was an avid card player and in her younger days was very active in her church at Trinity Lutheran and with her children’s school activities. She also loved to dance and was on a bowling team. In her later years, Marie traveled to every state in the union. Once asked what her favorite place was, she answered, “All states were interesting, but you know it’s Minnesota! You can’t go back on your own home state!” Marie is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Davis) Usgaard of Barron, WI; her son, Randy (Sue) Ellingson of Cresco, IA; and daughter, Renee Ellingson of Decorah, IA; four grandchildren and eleven great- grandchildren; her brother, Glenn (Alllene) Buxengard; sister-in-law, Winifred Buxengard; and several nephews and nieces. In addition to her parents, her two husbands, and her daughter, Marie was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Buxengard; sister, Grace Phillips; brothers-in-law, Stanley Ellingson, Kenneth Ellingson, Oscar Langlie and Evan “Kelly” Phillips; sisters-in-law, Laverne Buxengard and Evelyn Langlie; and nephew, Lennis Langlie. Marie had a true positive outlook on life and found happiness and humor in most everything. “I’m happy because I choose to be happy!” More recently she stated, “Some things about me are getting weaker and disappearing, but my mouth still works, and we can laugh together! I like laughter!” Funeral Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Spring Grove, on Friday, November 22, 2024, beginning at 11:00 AM with Pastor Lane Zaffke officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service and burial at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery immediately following the church service with fellowship luncheon to follow.
